Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation was the principal beneficiary. It was created by Bill Gates, Microsoft founder, and his wife Melinda. They focused on world health and education. Bill and Buffett have been close friends since the beginning of the 1990s. Other organizations that received donations were those run by Buffett's sons as well as the Susan Thompson Buffett Foundation named after his late wife. This foundation focuses on women's reproductive health , and provided scholarships for college. In 2010 Buffett and Gates formulated the Giving Pledge.
